When Coke Cola Bottlers Consolidated Companies (CCBCC) came to us for a fun interactive game they could use for a promotional opportunity we brainstormed about how we could play with the soft drink in an imaginative way that was also mobile and completely plug and play. We decided on an interactive display to inspire a social game that gets people moving and uses your body to direct a virtual stream of Coke Cola into a glass. Coke Pouring Kiosk uses our SocialMirror™ technology in a simple game that invites open ended play and attracts attention. Shoppers can share their experience, via our SocialShare™ Kiosk to friends and families in their social networks.

The Communicator Awards in Corporate Imagery & Gaming

SocialMirror™ Coke Kiosk won two awards; one for Excellence in the Corporate Image Category, and another Award of Distinction in the Gaming Category. The Communicator Awards is the leading international awards program recognizing big ideas in marketing and communications so this is a nice complement. We are blushing… Thanks Communicator Awards!

What do you get when you mix a world-class music, sci-fi, and pop culture museum with a socially immersive firm, and James Cameron’s famous vision for cinema? An award-winning interactive exhibit!

We are thrilled to announce that the Performance Capture Interactive for Avatar: The Exhibition, powered by Snibbe Interactive’s SocialStage™, won an Entertainment Award from Communication Arts in their 18th Interactive Annual. Read more about the award in their March/April issue!

Here at Snibbe Interactive we love to create socially immersive experiences, so when EMP Museum in Seattle came to us to help develop several immersive exhibits for Avatar: The Exhibition, we stepped up to the challenge. Working deep in partnership with EMP Museum, we developed several immersive interactives for the Museum’s larger exhibition. One of the interactives was the Performance Capture Interactive using SocialStage™, which uses similar technology as James Cameron did to capture the performance of his actors and set them in a virtual world. At EMP visitors can take a virtual walkthrough of Pandora itself. Visitors enter a motion capture volume and are scanned by 14 cameras, receive stage directions from James Cameron himself (via video of course), see themselves rendered as a Na’vi character, and perform a scene from Avatar, all without the motion-capture suit! Visitors can then receive a link to their videos posted on YouTube via SocialShare™.

The entire exhibition showcases behind-the-scenes development of the movie and includes props, concept art, sound design and more, so movie fans get a chance to see how the ideas behind the film came to life.

Currently on view at EMP Museum until September of 2012 Avatar: The Exhibition is hitting the road as a traveling exhibition this October. It will be at TheMuseum in Kitchner, Ontario and other locations through 2014. If you are around please stop by and become your very own avatar and experience Performance Capture Interactive first hand.

And of course, Snibbe Interactive’s founder Scott Snibbe is presenting! In fact, both on Saturday and Sunday you can find him speaking at the following sessions:

On Saturday March 17, 2012

SOUTHSIDE THEATRE

Summary: Today’s social web makes the process of sharing, discovering and combining ideas easier than ever before, resulting in a vast influx of creative output that’s fueling in- novation at an unprecedented rate. Artists are taking to web platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to create dynamic experiences that promote self-expression and creativity and engage their fanbase in new and interesting ways. Meanwhile, the people behind today’s top social platforms are designing tools that optimize the process of sharing and discovering information and facilitating inspiration.

On Sunday March 18, 2012

Summary: In October of 2011 Björk released Biophilia, the world’s first “app album,” in collaboration with a vast, multi-disciplinary team of designers and developers that included Scott Snibbe and Max Weisel. Conceived as a suite of 10 song-specific apps, each app links music composition and scientific concepts in a set of hands-on, immersive audiovisual experiences. The developers behind the project will talk about their work and lead a hands-on exploration of the Biophilia apps.

All sorts of people have descended on Austin, Texas for the 2012 SXSW Festival. If you walk and talk interactive you are in the Lone State right now. It is nearly impossible to choose from the many sessions that are happening this week. So, as your busy Tuesday unfolds (after SXSW Yoga) join us to hear Snibbe Interactive’s founder and CEO Scott Snibbe present about The Birth of Interactive Entertainment: Avatar to Björk. Scott will discuss these two ends of the interactive spectrum, and the space between: from intimate apps beneath our fingertips, to fully immersive, social exhibitions spanning thousands of square feet. He will situate this work among selections of twenty years of his companies’ interactive exhibits, interactive art, and interactive music, as well as key examples from the last 30 years’ history of interactivity, and make a bold claim for the rise of this medium to rival movies. Scott will also discuss the educational, societal, and industry benefits of interactivity; and the joys, challenges, and research involved in the creation and distribution of these new forms of interactive media. Think big, after all we are in Texas!

Marching from end to end of the 360 degree stage, with the 24 choir girls of Graduale Nobili following in otherworldly accompaniment, her songs tell an entrancing story of the power of nature and our ability to connect to her through technology.

Since the start of her solo career, Björk has consistently conveyed the message of electronic music as a means to connect to our humanity. Before Biophilia, her albums told personal stories–ones we can all relate to–of love, alienation, disappointment, wonder. Now, taking on nature itself as a topic, Björk in a way becomes more personal, letting us into how her own mind works, as in the song Crystalline, visualized as an 80′s style tunnel video game. The app (and concert visuals) are not just a clever idea, but a visualization of how Björk herself sees music when listening to it, with tunnels whose shape and sides correspond to the music’s tempo and structure.

The stage show is accompanied by video visuals that Snibbe Interactive produced, including eight tilted projections ringing the stage like a mandala facing down to envelop the audience. Depending on the song, these screens show imagery from the apps themselves (being “in the app” according to Björk); imagery from nature documentaries, including amazing Antarctic underwater time-lapse photography; and BBC visualizations of Earth’s tectonic plates. Several songs are accompanied by original floor projections, such as Cosmogony’s “reverse big bang” where thousands of galaxies gradually collapse onto Björk’s central singing figure; or the accompaniment of bass-line intros with cymatics imagery, as if the stage had become a giant vibrating plate.

The concert is accompanied by a residency and educational program at the New York Hall of Science including a feature-length Biophilia movie made from all-app imagery projected in the Hall’s digital theater.

There’s one show remaining in New York on March 5 and a few tickets still available. Don’t miss it!

And read the New York Times Review “Through the Wormhole With Björk.”

Clips are below!

Producer Tracy Dorsey brought her crew to Snibbe Interactive headquarters in San Francisco for a three-day shoot that resulted in an intimate and extensive portrait of Snibbe, who, among other projects, reflects on his recent work with James Cameron’s interactive “Avatar” exhibition at the EMP Museum, and Bjork’s breakthrough Biophilia App.

What’s next? Says Dorsey, “He envisions a fully participatory experience, one where your movements will actually change the story and affect what happens around you. It may sound far-fetched, but Scott says all he needs is the right partner.”

Titan tech magazine WIRED reprised its annual holiday pop-up store in New York City’s Times Square, featuring among others, Snibbe Interactive client Dell Computer. It’s not just a shopping destination, as WIRED’s site explains, “it’s an interactive experience that allows you to touch, test and tinker with the most ‘wired’ products out there for the digital gentleman, gadget girl, gastronaut, smarter upstarter, adventure capitalist, maker, or culturazzo in your life.”In keeping with the “interactive experience” WIRED envisioned, Dell turned to Snibbe Interactive to provide a customized installation of our popular InfoTiles interactive wall display to showcase their WIRED-worthy products.

“Their customization was interesting in that they added videos hidden amongst the tiles that, when activated, brought up animated shorts of new Dell products and corresponding characters like an ‘inventor’ or a ‘genius,’” says exhibits manager Patrick Wilson. “They’ve done it in a real sleek look with a really pared down color palette. It’s all blacks and blues and whites, which fits in well with the technology showcased at the WIRED Store.”

After WIRED’s pop-up retail experience runs it’s course, Dell’s InfoTiles will likely travel next to Texas where Dell is headquartered.

“The beauty about this sort of installation is that it’s not only customizable it’s portable and can be used in a variety of settings and updated with new content to match new venues and promotions,” says Wilson.

In this interesting talk from September’s TEDxLondon, subtited “Education Revolution,” Snibbe Interactive founder Scott Snibbe reminds that “math was invented to model nature.” He explored this and other notions while working on Bjork’s critically-lauded iPad app and album project Biophilia. In this video, Snibbe recounts the creative process as well as demonstrates the live integration of the app into Bjork’s interactive onstage performances.

“Sometimes education misses the poetry, motion and wonder of the natural world,” says Snibbe, who points to the possibilities of iPads and apps as a means of combining educational initiatives with entrepreneurial pursuits. He added wryly, “I pledge to continue making art that tricks people into learning about science.”
